Lots of secrecy has surrounded the forthcoming Social Group Magazine and Winter Events Programme, with organisers hinting of really special things ahead. Details of holidays to Crete, Caribbean, Egypt, Las Vegas, & France have already been released. However, little else is known about what has been planned and the rumours are that big things are afoot. Organisers have said that with hundreds of new members joining in recent months, it has made it possible for a big increase in what is on offer. Full details will be available shortly...

The new issue of Social Group Magazine is currently in the proof-reading stage. It is expected to be available from early September 2010.

We offer a programme of SOCIAL EVENTS - dining out, parties, dinner dances, live entertainment, theatre, cinema, concerts, wine tasting, quiz evenings, bowling, skittles, outdoor activities, archery, canoeing, boat trips, falconry, paintball, abseiling, horse riding, quad biking, walks, short breaks, and holidays - our next holidays are GREECE, CARIBBEAN CRUISE, EGYPT, LAS VEGAS, & FRANCE!

We are a respectable professional modern-style SOCIAL ENTERPRISE.

We are NOT a DODGY DATING AGENCY and we are NOT a SAD SINGLES CLUB. We don't supply "dates". However, this is of course a great way to make friends and to meet someone special!

Our focus is on socialising, having fun, and enjoying life! What people need most in life are friends of both sexes and lots of good company and good times! If you find romance amongst our hundreds of members, well, that's a very nice bonus! Yes, there's been lots of romances and lots of weddings over the years!

We have single people who are members. We also have couples who are members. We don't discriminate. Hundreds of people in their 20's, 30's, 40's, 50's, & 60's, with some events for separate ages and some events aimed at everyone.

Many of our single members find membership a great way to meet someone, in a nice normal way, without any stigma, pressure, or awkward situations. We can offer hundreds of great people to meet, all in normal enjoyable social situations. If you do meet someone special and become a couple, you can still join in with all our fabulous events, activities, and holidays as a couple, and still have all your Social Group friends to go out with! We do have lots of single members, but couples are most definitely welcome too and won't feel out of place! In today's busy world, everyone can benefit from us doing all the work to organise an amazing social life for them!

HERE'S HOW IT WORKS...

1. Prior to joining, you can view lots of photographs and read all about us on this website. If you want to know anything else, please telephone 08456 121 772 (open most days, 12noon - 7pm). We are happy to answer any questions and explain what we do and how everything works.

2. Complete and sign a JOIN FORM. On the bottom of the Home Page of this web site click on the link and download a form which you can then print off and fill in. If you have printer problems, give us a call and ask us to post you a form.

3. Once we have received a JOIN FORM, TWO PASSPORT PHOTOS, & PAYMENT, we will then do the work to process your application. Payment can be made by CARD over the telephone, or by CHEQUE via the post.

4. We'll make you a personalised MEMBER PHOTO ID CARD, which you can use to obtain discounts at restaurants, cinemas, & attractions. We will print a copy of Social Group Magazine for you - this is a large book which contains details of events and all the information you need to know. All of this will be posted to you in a NEW MEMBERS WELCOME PACK.

5. We are currently up to date in the office and sending out NEW MEMBER WELCOME PACKS within a few days. So join today and you can start your new social life next week! Events take place in Bristol, Bath, and Somerset, with our team of organisers hosting many of the local events.

6. We've been pretty busy in recent weeks, with lots of new members joining. Once you have received your NEW MEMBER WELCOME PACK and have a MEMBER ID CARD, you will be able to take part in our events. (People need to join before taking part in events - sorry, we are unable to offer free "taster" events.) Once you are a member, you will find a coupon in SOCIAL GROUP MAGAZINE that you can pass on to a friend to join for FREE (for a limited period only - valid until 1st August 2010).

Following our computer problems, we are currently under a lot of pressure to finish the new issues of Social Group Magazine on time. Our team are working in shifts around the clock to get things finished. Despite the delays, we hope to have it all ready by the print deadline and published on time.

Members - you can help in a number of ways. By being patient and supportive. By booking for events on time. By not trying to book for things late. By not calling us outside our telephone opening hours. By being flexible with the events you want to take part in. By making sure you turn up to the events you have booked with us. And so on...

Computer problems caused by our main PC burning out in a fire have caused delays in the last few months. We are behind with our work at the moment. We are catching up, but it has been difficult to operate our usual levels of service and there is still more to do. So your patience and support during this difficult period is very much appreciated.

An appeal has been started to ask for donations to re-finance the organisation, support all the good work we do to help people in our community make friends and enjoy a great social life, and help pay for the new hardware needed to run everything. If you are in a position to help, please make a donation, by sending a cheque payable to"SGE" to SOCIAL GROUP OFFICE, REVELSTONE, MARY TAVY, DARTMOOR, DEVON PL19 9PF.

Our team are working around the clock in order to try to catch up and to try to get the new issues of Social Group Magazine ready on time. Full details of all events for March and April are listed in the current issue of Social Group Magazine.

Please can we ask everyone to book before the stated deadlines for all events, and not to try to make late bookings, as this is not fair on us, as it does not leave us time to organise things properly. If you cannot get hold of our staff on the phone, please book by cheque via the post, and make sure this arrives well before the stated booking deadline, thank you.

MARCH 2010 - THE SOCIAL GROUP IS "STICKING IT TO THE MAN" & URGING EVERYONE TO GIVE A BOOST TO THE LOCAL ECONOMY!

A MONTH LONG CELEBRATION OF ‘SMALL IS BEAUTIFUL’!

LOCAL PUBS * FAMILY-RUN RESTAURANTS * UNIQUE INDIVIDUAL BUSINESSES

All events open to members in all areas! Come out, enjoy yourself, & help local people!

The idea of this is to encourage support for individuals, little firms, small players, local producers, farmers markets, family-run restaurants, local shops, the corner store, privately-owned pubs, and everything that is unique and individual in our culture.

These days, the Davids face an apparently impossible battle to compete with the Goliaths... When it comes to eating out, more and more, the same big chains are in every town - MacDonalds, KFC, Ask, Pizza Hut, Prezzo, Pizza Express, Chiquito, Zizzi, Bella Italia, Café Rouge, Old Orleans, TGI Fridays, Frankie & Benny’s, Nando’s, etc. The likes of the big pub chains such as Wetherspoons are looking for still more sites for pubs, while non-brewery owned freehouse local pubs are constantly closing down and being lost. Tesco, Sainsbury’s, Morrisons, Asda, etc. are constantly expanding - while up to 100 local shops a day are closing. In rural areas, many villages have been left without a single store and many have lost their post offices and pubs as well. While urban suburbs that once had thriving local shops only feature the lifeless, the graffiti-ridden, and the boarded up.

All losses of local services mean losses of local jobs and people needing to travel further afield.

Here at Social Group Enterprises Ltd. we run a unique local business, and we have first hand experience of all the issues, and of how challenging it has been to run a small business in recent years, with no support from the government and things just getting harder and harder for everyone. High costs, high taxes, expensive petrol, expensive utility bills, high bank charges, and ever more regulation. While the country has been put in debt to the tune of countless billions to help banks and big business, small local firms have received nothing and left to struggle through the recession.

We are also aware that the increasing lack of choice and individuality is arousing concerns, and for many, it’s beginning to feel like you can’t work for yourself and be your own boss any more!

What a sad state of affairs it will be if we all have to either work for big brother government or for big business, and all inventiveness and individuality is lost, or is just not economically viable any more.

Of course we enjoy the occasional Big Mac and Bargain Bucket, of course we find it convenient to shop at Sainsbury’s, and of course we rate many of the chain restaurants - we have no wish to knock success stories. No, we’re not saying big boys don’t have an important role in the modern economy. In many cases, we applaud how they have upped standards, with us frequently recognizing their contributions and seeing it as beneficial for everyone. However, we are sure everyone agrees that it’s not desirable to just want everything in this country to be run by the government or by big national and multi-national chains, especially firms where all the profits go elsewhere, out of the local economy, and often out of the country!

What we want to do this month is remind people that small local firms also have a place! This March, please do all you can to give local firms your full support and a much needed boost to their businesses! As much as you can this month, please do all you can to spend your money in locally owned shops, restaurants, pubs, etc.

AS FAR AS IS POSSIBLE, OUR MARCH EVENTS PROGRAMME WILL SUPPORT AND CELEBRATE ALL THAT IS LOCAL, INDIVIDUAL, UNIQUE, DIFFERENT, FAMILY-RUN, SPECIAL, PRIVATE, INDEPENDENT, ETC.

So for March 2010, please support our efforts to support the local economy and STICK IT TO THE MAN!

The Social Group office has been experiencing computer problems. Apologies for the disruption and for any delays. We are sorry if you have been unable to contact us via the internet in recent weeks. The computer problems have made things very difficult for us, so your patience is appreciated.

Things are starting to get back to normal again, which is good news, as we have been very busy recently with lots of new members joining, and with so many events running, there's been a lot to sort out.

Over the years we've seen lots of amateur copycat little local clubs and cliques set up as "flavour of the month", only to close down a short time later and let all their followers down. Some are not run properly, some break the law and get shut down, some are elitist and don't make everyone welcome, some are too dull, and some are just not very good.

They do say that imitation is the sincerest form of flattery. (They also say that imitation means someone is not bright enough to come up with their own ideas!) For our part, we just feel sorry for the people they delude and ultimately leave in the the lurch when they get into trouble or go bust.

Here in Bristol & Bath, BRISTOL & BATH SOCIAL GROUP has been successfully running local social events for many years. All the way back in the 1990's, we thought this up as our own groundbreaking brand new concept! From the start we always treated everyone fairly, we always made absolutely sure that we ran the organisation within the law, we gave up our day jobs to dedicate ourselves to running this full-time, we always went the extra mile to look after our customers, we always treated everyone not only as clients but also as our friends, and while being fun we always made sure this was respectable and everyone was safe.

In addition, BRISTOL & BATH SOCIAL GROUP has always offered extra value, with a FREE magazine for new members, more events, more discounts, and more work put into making sure we offer a unique service that you can't find anywhere else! That's why there is only BRISTOL & BATH SOCIAL GROUP!

That's why BRISTOL & BATH SOCIAL GROUP has carried on being successful year after year, and has become an important part of life here in this region. Run by husband and wife team, Andrew & Cathy Haglington - as featured by TV, press, & radio - BRISTOL & BATH SOCIAL GROUP was our own unique idea, and remains the undisputed leader in the field here in Bristol & Bath. We offer the highest standards in customer service - and we run this "because we care"! We see it as a noble calling to do so much good for so many. To be honest, even the people who joined BRISTOL & BATH SOCIAL GROUP who were unrealistic and a bit unfair, and who didn't get on particularly well with us personally, all seem to have made friendships out of this - and naturally we are pleased for each of you, as there's nothing better than for all our hard work to mean something and for people to get so much out of it!

Remarkably, this has now gone even further. The dedication put into this by the organisers has not only changed life for the better for so many people, has not only helped countless thousands of people to find new friends, and has not only has it led to numerous relationships, weddings and new families... But our efforts have actually changed the culture and even our language - with us popularising the terms "Social Event", "Social Opportunities", "Social Activities", "Social Entrepreneurs", "Social Enterprise", "Social Networking", and of course "Social Group"!

In fact, with Social Networking now being all the rage, our many years of hard work and good intentions in devising and developing what we do have managed to change the world! Yes, it started right here! It's hard to imagine these days, but when we started BRISTOL & BATH SOCIAL GROUP as one of the first parts of The Social Group all the way back in the 1990's, people actually queried what we meant by our use of the word "social" in this context! "Social" wasn't a word that was widely used anywhere (except with the British Government's "Social Services" of course), and it was hard for people to grasp the idea we had come up with as a mechanism in society to help put people in touch with each other. All these years later, it seems we've really had an impact on the whole planet - with the concept of social networking and socialising now being such a big thing! It's quite something!

Of course, our concept of social networking, in actually organising social events, dining out, parties, themed events, outdoor activities, and holidays that people can come along to by themselves and particpate in with a ready-made "group of friends", is still miles ahead of online social network sites which when you think about it are actually just about sitting typing.

It's hard to believe these days that back in 1997, when Andrew Haglington started up THE SOCIAL GROUP, that there wasn't such a thing as social groups or social networking web sites! Even the word "social" was hardly used at all, certainly not in the sense it is now.

THE SOCIAL GROUP was the first and the original, offering something completely different and very special. Over the years, thousands of people, all across the South West of England have thought it was a fabulous idea - just what had been missing in their life - and have decided it was for them!

THE SOCIAL GROUP now includes not only Bristol & Bath Social Group, but also Somerset Social Group, Devon Social Group, Cornwall Social Group, and Social Group Holidays.

Today, the widespread use of the word "social" in the media and on the internet can all be traced back to Andrew Haglington's brilliant original concept back in 1997, when nothing like this had ever been done before!

It all started off with Andrew suffering some really nasty ill health during the 1990's and after his first wife left him at his lowest point, came out of his efforts to rebuild a life for himself and make some new friends. After experiencing just how tough life could be, it occured to Andrew that what was needed was a ready-made 'group of friends' to go out with and an organised social life which everyone could enjoy together. Andrew had seen there was something missing in society, a mechanism for socialising and making friends - so he set out to fill the hole, and make life better for people - and the rest, as they say, is history!

For Andrew, fighting to get back his health and doing so much for others went hand in hand. Going from 'ZERO TO HERO' didn't happen overnight - it took many long years of hard work and much trial and error to get it right. But perserverance won through in the end and today people regularly stop Andrew in the street to thank him and say The Social Group has transformed their lives!

As well as helping countless thousands of people to have fun and find new friends, lots of single people have met someone special and found romance. Andrew himself met his second wife Cathy through The Social Group, and there cannot be any better testimonial to this being something remarkable than that, with Andrew and Cathy now running The Social Group together.

We boarded our eagerly awaited voyage unprepared for our first breathtaking sight of the floating resort Andrew & Cathy had booked for us, an awesome 15 storey, 110,000 ton vessel carrying 3500 passengers and 1200 crew.

On board the ship there was never a dull moment, with 22 bars and lounges, two swimming pools, jacuzzis, water slide, spa, mini golf course, jogging track, table tennis, internet café, full sized theatre, numerous restaurants, sunbathing on deck, and a giant LCD screen loomed over Lido Deck’s swimming pool, showing pop concerts, movies and some of the 'fun' antics aboard our 'fun ship.'

The islands we visited were totally tropical Caribbean, with sunbathing on beautiful beaches, a feast of snorkelling on coral reefs, interesting sightseeing, and bargains to be had in the duty free shops. Iguanas posed for photographs under palm trees, with a backdrop of warm turquoise seas and white powder sand beaches. Welcome to paradise!

I especially enjoyed the Spanish / American city of San Juan, Puerto Rico, where Andrew & Cathy found us a free trolley ride around the city, followed by a look around the fascinating shops, then lots of fun at Senor Frogs lively bar, adorned with balloons and having our faces painted, and joining in with a friendly conga - yes that's right - in the middle of the afternoon!!

I would recommend this Social Group Holiday and would certainly love to do it all again. The food on the cruise was plentiful and delicious - including a self service buffet of gourmet delights, 24 hour pizzeria, Burrito bar, Sushi bar and even fish and chips - as much as you wanted, plus each evening we dined in style with 3 or 4 courses!

The ship was spotlessly clean. The dinner staff and the cabin staff were wonderful. We were thoroughly spoiled throughout the entire time. The en-suite cabins were spacious with ample room to walk around and plenty of space for clothes and toiletries etc., plus hair-dryers & TV.

The cruise was followed by time in South Beach Miami, topped by a wonderful meal at a place Andrew & Cathy recommended on the fashionable and elegant Lincoln Road, a very popular place with just about everyone. For me, the trip to the Everglades National Park where we saw alligators and took a ride on one of the famous airboats was another highlight, plus a boat trip around the homes of the 'rich and famous' in Miami.

All in all, a great time was had by everyone who took part. Highly recommended. Can't wait for my next cruise holiday with The Social Group! Thank you Andrew and Cathy for organising this wonderful holiday! It was great! Best wishes, Marjorie

Hello Everyone! Just to let you know, we are now back from the group holiday to the Caribbean & Florida. There will be photos displayed on the http://www.socialgroupholidays.com web site in due course, along with us catching up the backlog of photos from other events in all areas. So many events - so little time!

The Social Group Office is now re-open. Apologies for any inconvenience or delays while we were away. Over the next few days, we shall be working through the backlog of office work and doing our best to get up to speed. As soon as possible, we should have things back to normal. Your patience and understanding while we catch up is very much appreciated, thank you.

Due to the Royal Mail / Communication Workers Union dispute halting postal deliveries on some days and generally causing ongoing delays, please send any bookings by post earlier than normal in order to make sure we receive them in time, thank you.

On Budget Membership, with the discount coupons in Social Group Magazine, you can book 4 standard events in one month for just £10 in total, saving you money. On V.I.P. membership all standard events are free and all you have to do is let us know what you wish to enjoy.

Telephones are open most days throughout the year. For your convenience, we open late each day until 7pm and we work weekends, so you can call us on Saturdays and Sundays too.

Social Group organisers have been unwell for the last week and off work with a virus. According to the doctor, it is likely to have been the H1N1 Swine Flu virus.

All events scheduled to have taken place before Monday 14th September have been cancelled, as we have not been well enough to organise anything. Apologies for any temporary inconvenience.

WE ARE NOW OPEN FOR BUSINESS AS NORMAL - BUT BY POST ONLY.

Please note - telephone booking may not be available for a few days until we feel up to returning to work. We won't be out hosting social events in person until we are recovered, as we don't wish to pass this very nasty bug on to anyone else.

Members are welcome to send in cheques by post to book for events or to order extra copies of the brand new Winter 2009-2010 issue of Social Group Magazine, which will be sent out as soon as possible.

THE WHOLE BRISTOL & BATH REGION HAD HEAVY SNOW FALLS ON FRIDAY 6TH FEBRUARY. DURING FRIDAY,THE SEVERN BRIDGES ACROSS TO WALES HAD TO BE CLOSED DUE TO ICE. HOWEVER, MOST MAIN ROADS ARE NOW RE-OPEN AND MORE OR LESS NORMAL. PLEASE DRIVE SLOWLY AND BE MINDFUL OF SLIPPY SURFACES AND ICE! NO FURTHER SNOW IS FORECAST FOR FRIDAY EVENING OR SATURDAY. THERE IS THE CHANCE OF FURTHER SNOW ON SUNDAY.

Bristol City F.C. manager Gary Johnson vowed the club would bounce back from their 1-0 defeat in the play-off final to Hull City F.C. at Wembley. In a fairly dull match, with the Bristolians shaken by a serious injury to influential Bradley Orr, a quality goal from ex-Sheffield United star Dean Windass was all that separate the two sides, and left Hull £60 million the richer. However, as good sports, we are sure that everyone in Bristol wish Hull all the best in the big time of the Premier League for the first time in their history.

THE SOCIAL GROUP WAS FEATURED IN THE BRISTOL EVENING POST ON 12TH JANUARY 2008

ON THE TRAIL OF FRIENDS AND EVEN A LITTLE ROMANCE - The Social Group was founded in 1997 by Andrew Haglington, and now covers Bristol, Bath and Somerset. Events include parties, bars and meals, murder mystery, days out, outdoor activities, and much more. Also holidays, venturing to America, Australia, and Crete, plus weekends away in England and France.

Andrew set up the group after a skiing accident, followed by ME and his first wife having an affair and leaving him. He recalled: "It was a double whammy of illness and divorce. I became more and more isolated and it was very hard without friends. It finally dawned on me that I couldn't be the only one on my own and all I had to do was get everyone together. So many people, especially women, hate going out on their own because they feel self-conscious. However, it can be just as awkward for men. I remember going to a pub, sitting at the bar, having a drink with no one to talk to. I left, feeling horribly lonely and spent a lot of time watching TV. I know a lot of people out there feel the same - because they've moved, been bereaved, been through a divorce, or work in a job that has you sat in front of a computer all day. Life has to be more than work-telly-sleep. So in 1997, I set this up to give people a fantastic social life!"

Andrew's wife, Cathy said: "I'd separated and was looking for more to do but friends were not always available and I ended up stuck on my own evening and weekends. When I saw an advert for the group, I met Andrew, we hit it off straight away. Andrew proposed in the middle of a Social Group holiday to Las Vegas, where we married in a helicopter over the Las Vegas Strip at night."

Ted Naas, of St George, Bristol, joined the group 18 months ago, a year after his wife died. He said: "I felt very lonely staring at the four walls and talking to the cat, so I joined to have a life. It's such a friendly atmosphere. I've enjoyed dinner dances and meals out. You never know, I might find even some romance."

Steve Collins of Midsomer Norton, said: "I got divorced and I work as a landscape gardener, which meant some days I didn't talk to anyone. I really needed to find a life outside work. I've met a lot of new people now and tried many activities, including horse-riding and caving which I never imagined I'd do."

With all the heavy rains we have had recently, Quad Biking this time was a very very muddy affair!

By the end of the afternoon, some members were more mud than human - so we told them to clean up their act! Volunteers to hose people down were not lacking!

Members met at Aqua Restaurant by Bristol Quayside for a most enjoyable evening with the group of friends. Best things about the restaurant were a good ambience and friendly staff, with the food generally of a high standard.

Highlights in Singapore included the amazing Laser FX & Fountains Show on Sentosa Island, and the dim sum banquet at Yum Cha restaurant in Chinatown

Highlights in Malaysia included a visit to an orchid valley in the rainforest and time at the ancient fishing village of Kukup.

Highlights included a personal guided tour of the Western Australian Parliament by the speaker of the House of Commons Hon. Fred Riebling JP MLA, swimming on the Ningaloo Coral Reef with turtles and sharks, and seen here our day out on safari with Neil McLeod of Ningaloo Safaris...
